Sinopoli, 25 Years On: A Tribute Across Generations

Sinopoliana: Honouring Giuseppe Sinopoli at the Deutsche Oper Berlin

On 29 June, as part of Sinopoliana, the festival organised by the Italian Cultural Institute to mark the 25th anniversary of Giuseppe Sinopoli’s passing, violinist and Giulia Rimonda conceived and realised a unique musical tribute at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

The choice of venue carried extraordinary symbolic weight. It was here, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, that Giuseppe Sinopoli passed away in 2001 while conducting Verdi’s Aida. Twenty-five years later, the theatre became the setting for a project dedicated not only to remembering the artist, but to celebrating the enduring relevance of his vision.

At the centre of Rimonda’s artistic concept was the coming together of three generations linked by Sinopoli’s legacy. Young musicians performed alongside members of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Teatro La Fenice of Venice, two of the institutions most closely associated with his remarkable career. Bringing these forces together in a single project created a powerful symbol of continuity between past, present and future, an idea that lay at the heart of Sinopoli’s artistic and human values.

The programme explored composers who profoundly shaped Sinopoli’s intellectual and musical world. Arnold Schoenberg’s Kammersymphonie No. 1 in Anton Webern’s arrangement for piano quintet was performed alongside Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen and works by Sinopoli himself, as Klangfarben and Momento, tracing a journey through the artistic landscape that defined one of the most original musical minds of his generation.

The evening became a living testament to Sinopoli’s legacy: a dialogue between institutions, generations and artistic perspectives.

For Rimonda, leading this ambitious collaboration was both a privilege and a responsibility: an opportunity to honour a towering cultural figure while reaffirming the importance of supporting the next generation of musicians, a cause that remained central to Sinopoli throughout his life.

Alongside the conception and realisation of the concert itself, Giulia Rimonda and Resonance developed a series of original video productions dedicated to exploring Giuseppe Sinopoli’s life, artistic vision, and enduring legacy. Created as a complement to the live event, these videos aim to bring audiences closer to Sinopoli’s extraordinary intellectual and musical world, extending the festival’s mission beyond the concert hall. The videos can be viewed below, together with the official trailer of the concert.
